Finding a Consultant

Dear Kim,

We are looking to hire a consultant to conduct a development assessment of our organization. We’d like to concentrate on local consultants, but there are less than a handful in our area. Should we do a formal RFP, or do you think personally talking to them would be sufficient?

Dear Local,

First, I congratulate you on looking locally. So often organizations feel they must bring in someone from far away when local talent lies right at their doorstep! I would not do an RFP (request for proposal). You will often be sent boiler plate information anyway, and you will have to call to follow up. I would first talk to other organizations who have used the consultants you have in mind and get an informal read on who would be best for what you want. Then I would call those consultants that seem appropriate and go from there. Good luck.
