Grassroots Fundraising & the People Behind It

Grassroots Fundraising believes that fundraising is a critical and integral part of progressive social change. We also believe that anyone can learn fundraising. For both those reasons, we create and distribute accessible materials that teach people how to raise money.

The Grassroots Fundraising Journal is our flagship publication.

Published every other month for more than 25 years, the Grassroots Fundraising Journal produces much-needed information on how to build successful organizations. Each issue offers practical, how-to instruction on fundraising strategies such as direct mail, special events, major gift campaigns, and online fundraising. We also offer tools to help you build a board of directors that is willing to raise money, choose a database to track donors, manage your time effectively, and ultimately develop a successful fundraising program.

The Grassroots Fundraising Journal is funded by subscription fees, donations, sales of materials and advertising.

Grassroots Fundraising is a nonprofit organization, fiscally sponsored by the Agape Foundation.

Donations to Grassroots Fundraising, Inc. are much appreciated. Donate now online with a credit card or by postal mail with a check. (More information about donating.)

History...

The Grassroots Fundraising Journal was founded in 1981 by Kim Klein, internationally known fundraiser and trainer, and Lisa Honig, who worked in development for many years. Kim now serves as Publisher of the Journal. Kim and Lisa observed that, while there was a large oral tradition about grassroots fundraising, little of it had been recorded in writing. Furthermore, much of the material that was written for the nonprofit sector assumed that organizations were of a size, and had access to resources, beyond most grassroots groups. In particular, organizations working on issues that challenge the status quo — such as those working on racial and economic justice, environmental advocacy, peace, or human rights and civil liberties — have a hard time finding information that speaks to their specific needs.
